“We were really lucky to find an acre in Pewee Valley,” Dore added as she looked out toward the backyard, where she’s working on a shade garden. The lush space, with lots of surrounding trees, is a great space to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. There’s no lake (but) there’s water, with the pool and everything.”īeing more than 500 miles away from Michigan, this is the closest she and her family will get to feeling as though they’re on Gull Lake. “I love having the screened-in porch,” Dore exclaimed, “so we can sit out there. Of course, one of the most important aspects of the “lake house” is the ability to connect with the outdoors - more specifically, a body of water. Though she sacrificed some cabinetry to make space for all the windows, Dore insists she wouldn’t like the room as much if she hadn’t done so. The more light, the better - and we love being able to look out of the home and see the beautiful yard at every angle.” “My favorite thing about the kitchen,” Dore continued, “is my signature design of using lots of windows. The well-lit room, with its large, statement-piece island, is a great space for that. “I wish I had more time to cook and bake - but I love to entertain.” The new kitchen, with its Danby marble countertops and custom-made cabinetry that’s made to look like it was designed a century ago, is Dore’s favorite room in the house. And it is the total reflection of myself and my family. It’s the smallest of the houses she’s created for her family, “But,” she added, “it means the most. “We didn’t waste any big spaces,” she said.Įvery part of the house is functional there’s no big foyer or formal dining room. She also dotted the home with accessories that remind her of special memories, including everything from photos of Gull Lake and antiques from her parents to paintings that trigger remembrances of fun times that were had.Īs far as the layout of the home goes, Dore aimed for coziness and practicality. The Pewee Valley home, which is the fourth that Dore has designed and built for her family, is meant to reflect her Michigan background and the house her father built on Gull Lake. This is my lake house in Kentucky that I wish I had in Michigan.” “My heart is in Michigan,” she explained.
But even after many years in the Bluegrass State - Dore has since gotten married, raised children and welcomed two grandchildren - she hasn’t forgotten her roots. After working for her late father - who had his own building company - at the age of 16, she grew to love the industry and went on to study design at the University of Kentucky. Family mattersĭore has been in the design, building and construction business for 25 years.

There are no plans for other movie roles just yet, so for now, Dore and her family are simply enjoying the house she custom-designed and built just for them. “There was fake blood all over the trim and everything,” she laughed. Dore and her daughter even got to be extras in "Mommy Group Murder," which was released in March. “The movie starts out going right up to our front door,” she said.
